In GW2's case it did because their MMO is structured around huge pve non-instanced events. And it's usually not deemed worth it by the people who make monetary and resource decisions unless it directly impacts income. I understand the difficulties involved and I know it costs a fair amount of resources up front. Pissing off a few people saves more than actually solving it in this case. It's not laziness, it's just about not deeming the resources it takes worth it because the problem naturally "goes away" when active player levels peter out and normalize.

The technology out there for server administration, virtualization and sharding is significantly improved over the past ten years. Just because old games had these issues doesn't mean it's unfixable. I strongly, firmly believe that it's not laziness or apathy that's keeping them from "Fixing it." Cuz I've seen apathy. If it's something that is actually demonstrably losing them money (and with all the downtime and canceled subs, you KNOW it is) and was within their power to fix, they would have fixed it by now. Because being able to claim you have the best server stability AND the most content would be an astonishing feat. If there was an easy way to fix it, someone OTHER than GW2 and WoW (EVE is kind of a separate thing you'd have to design from launch) would have fixed it by now. Server congestion issues are SO rampant across the entire genre and even bleeding over into OTHER genres such as MOBAs.

If 20 games have the same problem and only one game has come up with a solution, I smell proprietary software or something that is simply impractical for those other 19 games to implement. ESO had these problems probably even WORSE. WoW had these problems and their solution is borderline insanity. FFXIV 2.0 had these problems.ĮQ1 had these problems. I like to think broadly: FFXI had these problems. I love the game and greatly respect the devs for what they've done with it but seriously, it's a business not a charity. But being asked to pay as much as we are and forgive flaws that were here since launch not only in this MMO but their previous one too is IMO pretty obnoxious. Luckily I'm on a medium pop server now and only the wall of Raubahn affected me, which wasn't a big deal for me personally. Honestly, they've had years to fix it but I don't think they will because we keep excusing and forgiving it. As a customer I don't have to excuse anything when the only thing they keep saying time and time again when these issues re-appear is "we're sorry" and "it's due to congestion". Other games ask no monthly fee from me, and they solved it years ago (GW2). It's their job to solve it and it's what I'm paying for. Putting on my customer hat, wherein I pay them monthly and am asked to shell out additional for expansions and am asked to pay for certain content in the game I find important (emotes, exclusive furniture and clothing), I don't care why. Now if I put on my software developer hat (that's my job) I know there's likely many good reasons it's still not fixed, and I especially know it's not an easy thing to fix. If you watch the new 3 part documentary on FFXIV that's been linked here recently, it's known that they rewrote the game and engine from scratch before relaunching with 2.0, of course benefitting a lot from all the existing assets and probably server structures in place.
